From February 13 through April 11 of 1864, the Unionist counties and cities of Northern Virginia met in Alexandria for a Constitutional Convention. The Virginia Constitution of 1864 most notably abolished slavery in Virginia and recognized West Virginia as a separate state. When the Confederacy fell, it went into effect for all of Virginia.
